The Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Forestry in collaboration with NamWater and other stakeholders are working on improving the water quality of water sources in the Upper Swakop Basin to ensure water security. In order to raise awareness among stakeholders and water users on the water quality and quantity management challenges of the Upper Swakop Basin; exchange information on current development challenges and their impacts on the water resources; and to discuss the importance of basin (health) protection towards sustainable development; the “Workshop on the Management of the Upper Swakop Basin: Key to Water Security to Central Area of Namibia” was organized by Department of Water Affairs and Forestry (DWAF) and NamWater from 8 – 9 February 2012.

Presentations on the importance of water quality to the supply of water in the Upper Swakop Basin and experts in the field of basin management discussed and cited case studies of negative impacts of poor basin management on water supply. The workshop agreed that increased collaboration and partnership in water resources management, research and development is necessary and possible through establishment of a Basin Management Forum.
