ASSAR project

The semi-arid regions of Africa and Asia already experience harsh climates and these conditions are expected to intensify over the course of the coming decades. Hundreds of millions of people live in these areas, and these changing climates could amplify their vulnerability and compromise their livelihoods and wellbeing.

By working in this climate-change hotspot with a wide range of stakeholders for seven countries (Botswana, Ethiopia, Ghana, India, Kenya, Mali and Namibia), ASSAR is examining the dynamics and drivers of this vulnerability, while exploring ways to promote the resilience of people, local organisations and governments.

ASSAR’s research is case study based and strives to integrate climatic, environmental, social and economic change. The dynamics of gender roles and relations form particularly strong themes throughout the project approach. This work not only targets the priorities identified by project stakeholders, but provides the opportunity for cross-regional comparison and lesson sharing.
